ADR2 IDE 60 drive making clacking noise

Postby taylormade » Fri Oct 10, 2008 11:56 am

I have found an ADR2 IDE 60 drive in one of our unused servers.
I got excited because I thought I could use if for tape backups.
When I open the cassette door however, the head starts moving up and down rapidly and makes a loud clacking or rattling noise.
I assume this is not normal, and I need to see if my drive is still in warranty.
How can I do that?

This seems like a common problem.

I have both an ADR2.60ide and an ADR2.120s, in separate machines, that have started making this noise - often after the system is reset. Although old, these drives have been little used.

I agree, it appears to be the head clacking up and down. I guess this may be the positioning servo going into oscillation - but is there a solution?
